Godaddy has recently announced that the business is up for sale and serious bidders will be invited to review audited financial statements in anticipation of an auction. While the company has always been privately held, no one knows exact revenue and expense numbers except those who are inside and those who get vetted for the coming auction.

Based on general volume numbers though, and Godaddy's unique position as a leader in both total domain registrations and hosting brand recognition, some analysts are suggesting a sale value around $1 billion dollars. That is a lot of money, even in a good economy!

Now many hosting and domain registration customers have expressed frustration with Godaddy's products and service, but a strong advertising reach and general public awareness of the company is quite a rare yet successful position for a web services business. Of course, only time will tell if investors can improve the margins enough to profit from such an expensive purchase.

It is widely suspected that this current investigation involves the well-kept secret of Google's search algorithm. While Google does have one of the best ranking systems (judging by their user satisfaction & loyalty...) it cannot make everyone happy as there are only a few spots on the top of the search rankings and a lot of sites are going to end up left out.

As a concrete benefit, it will now be almost impossible for technology manufacturers to sue against "jailbroken" or unlucked devices and people who mix up video and audio content are more likely to be protected under fair use defenses.
The French Competition Authority has recently ruled that Google's position in the search market sector constitutes an unlawful monopoly, but ironically, the review was set in motion because Google had been reluctant to sell advertising space to a company that is helping French citizens avoid law enforcement speed traps. Hesitant to ever encourage unlawful activity and always eager to play by the rules, Google may have ended up shooting itself in the foot by failing to understand a French culture that values both a sense of fairness with a history of flouting authority.
It is often a complaint of established and traditional media outlets that online alternatives are diluting their reporting and research efforts, but by following the distribution of a recent popular story we can see that just as often it is the traditional media who is lifting ideas and topics from the blogs.

In this particular case, a story broke about a woman who was suing Google after sustaining injuries on the path Google maps had recommended. Danny Sullivan heard about it from a friend and posted it to Search Engine Land, and within the course of a weekend the story had been picked up by dozens of websites, online newspapers, TV channels, and even the AP wire itself. Unfortunately, few of the outlets to republish the news ever gave credit to their source and instead work to create the illusion that they'd discovered this completely on their own accord.

This example demonstrates clearly that the flow of news goes both ways - and that if anything, it is the traditional and "respected" news organizations who fail to properly cite the sources they use to find the news.
